PS95 LASH Barge
UK/US, cargo barge/lighter system, 1969 ![]() The LASH (Lighter Aboard SHip) concept was developed in the late 1960's for the transport of bulk cargoes - typical cargoes included maize and tabacco. The lighters would be towed to the departure port where they would be lifted by crane or lift onto a larger "mother" ship. The ship could then carry many barges economically over a longer distance after which the lighters would be unloaded and towed to their final destination. The system worked best for cargoes destined or originating up rivers where larger ships could not dock. The lighters could carry up to 380 tons of cargo. The system was not a commercial success and is largely out of use, though still operational along the north of Russia. Technical Details
