Dungeness Old Lighthouse

£3.75

GB, Kent, 1904

Description

The shingle spit of Dungeness Point has been a hazard to shipping for centuries. The earliest lighthouse was built in 1615 and replaced in 1635. On advice from Trinity House, a new lighthouse was built in 1792. This was in use until 1904 when the lighthouse known as the Dungeness Old Light was built. 163’/43m tall and brick-built, it is one of the tallest in the UK. This lighthouse was in turn replaced in 1961 when the new nuclear power station obscured the view of the old lighthouse.

Dungeness Old lighthouse is open to the public and visitors can enjoy the panoramic views from the gallery – check in advance for opening times. It is accessible by road or via the narrow-gauge steam railway operating from Hythe to Dungeness Point.

The model shows the lighthouse as it currently appears.
