Description
The most famous lighthouse in the British Isles is probably the Eddystone, built on a small and very dangerous rock 13 miles south west of Plymouth. There have been four separate lighthouses built here. The original tower, completed in 1698 by Henry Winstaley, was the first lighthouse to be built on a small rock in the open sea. The current lighthouse was designed by James Douglass in 1882 – it replaced John Smeaton’s famous tower which was becoming unsafe due to the foundations eroding.
The lighthouse was automated and had a helipad fitted in 1982. It was converted to solar power in 1994 – it is not open to the public.
This model is part of a range of models of English and Welsh lighthouses produced under the terms of a licencing agreement with Trinity House.
