HMS Staunch was designed as a small ship that could be used by Armstrongs to carry guns out to sea for testing. Sir Gorge Rendel realised the potential of the type as cheap coastal defense gunboats and offered her to the Royal Navy. Over 30 similar gunboats were built, including HMS Kite. The main armament was a 9″ or 10″ gun carried forward and aimed by turning the whole ship.
Note – The model includes both HMS Staunch and HMS Kite.
