Description
The roll-on-roll-off ferry “Viking 5” was launched in 1974 at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg – the 6th of 9 near-sister-ships known as the “Papenberg Sisters”. “Viking 5” was 10m longer than the others, providing additional cabin and passenger capacity.
She sailed initially for the Viking Line between Helsinki, Finland, and Stockholm, Sweden, from 1974 to 1980. Between 1981 and 1983 she was named “The Viking” and sailed between Ramsgate and Dunquerque. She was then sold to Fred. Olsen Lines and renamed “Bolette”, providing a service sailing between Kristiansand, Hirtshals and Egersund. After 1988 she was sold to Comarit, renamed “Boughaz” and sailed between Algeciras and Tangier. She was finally scrapped in 2015. When originally built she could carry 1,200 passengers and 260 cars.
This model of “Bolette” is a digitised version of an unpublished design by the late German designer Nils-Peter Jaechel and every effort has been made to be faithful to his original creation. The model has been published with the approval of the designer’s family and is a joint project by David Hathaway and Klaus Hildebrand.
Please note that the model is available only as a downloadable PDF.
Instruction diagrams and either English or German building instructions are included.
This model shows the “Viking 5” as “Bolette” in Fred. Olsen Lines colours. It is also planned to release the model at some point in the future in the original Viking/Sally Line red hull/white upper-works colour scheme.
